Flocking Adhesives

Water-based flocking adhesive directions for foam, paper, ABS, PVC, PP/PE support, hangers, metal, glass, packaging, and automotive interior parts.

Selection logic for water-based flocking adhesives

Flocking adhesive selection should not start from the material name alone. A reliable recommendation depends on surface energy, release-agent contamination, flock fiber, application method, drying or curing window, abrasion target and compliance expectations.

ABS and rigid PVC are usually easier to wet and bond than PP or PE. Flexible PVC needs plasticizer migration checks. PP and PE usually require surface activation, primer or a dedicated low-surface-energy route before the flocking adhesive can be approved.

Main water-based routes

  • Water-based acrylic flocking adhesive for paper, packaging and decorative surfaces
  • Water-based PU / PUD flocking adhesive for plastics, foam, automotive interior and higher abrasion needs
  • PU-acrylic hybrid route when softness, adhesion and cost need to be balanced
  • Low-surface-energy support route for PP, PE and TPO projects
  • Specialty silicone or elastomer route for narrow-window projects, handled by sample discussion

Substrate route matrix

Substrate Practical adhesive route What to verify
ABS / rigid PVC Water-based PU or acrylic-PU flocking adhesive after cleaning; light roughening or activation if release agent is present. Mold release residue, surface texture, abrasion target, heat aging.
Flexible PVC PVC flocking route with plasticizer migration review and aging test before approval. Plasticizer migration, tacky surface, soft adhesive layer, long-term bond loss.
PP / PE Surface activation, primer, or dedicated low-surface-energy route; not treated as a universal direct-bond system. Low surface energy, slip agent migration, shrinkage or beading, weak peel after aging.
Paper / paperboard Water-based acrylic or PU route with controlled penetration and low-temperature drying when needed. Paper deformation, uneven absorption, exposed base, printed-layer compatibility.
Foam / sponge Foam flocking route that balances wet-out, penetration control and soft hand feel. Hard hand feel, over-penetration, flock loss after rubbing or washing.
Metal / glass Clean surface, remove oil or oxide layer, then choose water-based flocking adhesive or primer-supported route. Oil contamination, corrosion risk, optical cleanliness, abrasion and aging.
